Satellite Dishes

These small satellite dishes have invaded the country. Television is still the most affordable form of entertainment, and as a result, no matter how poor they are, people pay for this service if no other options are available. The dishes are most present in many villages or poor areas, were cable television is not yet available, but they can they also be found in cities more and more often.

Bucuresti

Bucuresti (aka Bucharest), is the capital of Romania and, by far, the largest city. Bucharest is a place that many people hate (some of the reasons being the horrible traffic, the dirt and the often very stressed and rude people) but that as many people love. As Bucharest is my home city, I constantly document it and as a result, this set of photographs could constantly evolve.

Having joined the European Union in 2007, Romanians are extremely eager to display EU related symbols all over the place. Although the EU flag is the most common, I also came across some more unconventional ways of showcasing European pride.

Rural Aspects of Urban Life

During the communist regime, Romania undertook a major urbanization process. Many villages were converted to cities, and many houses were demolished to make room to blocks of flats. Today, there are numerous signs all over the country that this process took place and that some people have kept their rural habits, that often seem out of place in an urban setting.

Industrial Ruins

After the fall of the communist regime, many of the country’s factories were taken out of use. While some of them were demolished to make room to new developments, others were stripped of everything that could be reused or sold and then abandoned.

Nightlife

There are more and more musical events being regularly organized all over Romania. Moreover, summer 2007 saw an unprecedented number of well known musicians coming to perform here. Bucharest is at the forefront of the music scene, with many of the events taking place here.

Cars

Romanians love cars of all shapes and colors, but especially if they’re foreign, cost a lot of money and inspire envy. However, because only a segment of the population can afford expensive cars, the traditional Dacia (or the more recent Renault made Logan model) is still the car of the masses.

Seeing a vast amount of a country’s land gives one a much better sense of the country’s actual physical “body”. Intentionally, the photos shown here only cover a small amount of Romania’s landscape as this was outside the scope of the project. For those interested, there already exist vast amounts of material on this subject.
